EAC How do I know it's time main image

Only one unpleasant part of having pets is that they do not live as long as we do. Although modern veterinary medicine has made a significant role in extending our pets’ lifespan or life expectancy and in improving their quality of life, it is unfortunate that we have to let them go someday. Some pets have health problems associated with older age and some pets may develop illnesses at a younger age. Many older dogs and cats may have normal/expected behavioral, mental, and physical changes that come with age. Older pets may become a little slower, may sleep more, skin/haircoat may change in color/characteristics, may have changed with their sensory systems or may have changes in their body weight, etc. However, it is important to realize that some of these changes in older pets can be due to disease/illness. Here are some of the symptoms that you want to carefully watch for

• Increase in drinking and urination
• Increased panting or heavy breathing
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea/softer stool
• Weight loss
• Weight gain/distended belly
• Hairloss
• Difficulty holding urine and/or feces
• Blood in urine
• Straining to urinate and/or defecate
• Coughing
• Changes in appetite
• Lethargy
• Becoming a little grumpy/aggressive
• Seizures

• Appears anxious
• Wandering/pacing/circling
• Appears to be confused
• Inability to recognize families, other familiar people, or animals
• Increased vocalization
• Visiting unusual places/areas
• Hiding
• Lumps and bumps
• Bumping into things or getting lost
• Accidents inside the home
• No or less interest in spending time with you
• Difficulty getting up and getting around or inability to stand or walk

If you notice any of these symptoms become persistent and frequent, a visit to a veterinarian is warranted for exams, diagnostics, and/or treatments. Discussion with your veterinarian in regards to your pet’s condition and quality of life may give you a better idea if humane euthanasia would be the best option.
